Our Verdict

As a still camera, Canon EOS R5 is definitely the best product Canon has ever made. It perfectly combines the form of EOS R, the functions of EOS 5D, and the professional autofocus of EOS-1D X. If you are a stationary person or a hybrid shooter who can wander between photography and videography, then it is one of your best cameras that will always have fun to use. Alas, if your main interest is pure video shooting, we do not recommend R5. Don't get me wrong, its video is incredible-but it has to overcome the limitation of overheating before it can become your A camera (unless you only shoot 4K 30p, in which case you don't need to do this at all).

Stay sharp and focused

The dual-pixel CMOS AF II focuses quickly, with 5940 optional AF positions, covering almost 100% of the frame. Fast-moving subjects can remain sharp even in fast and unexpected movements, and face/eye detection is excellent for shallow depth-of-field portraits.

Breakthrough smart autofocus

The camera's autofocus is programmed using deep learning AI, which was first developed for our groundbreaking EOS-1D X Mark III. In this way, even when viewed from the side, EOS R5 can still recognize and track the subject's face and eyes with new precision and precision. When shooting dogs, cats, and birds, you can also use this tracking function to keep them in sharp focus when they move-this is the first of EOS cameras.

There is no other camera next to EOS R5. Capture 45-megapixel full-frame images at an amazing 20fps, completely silent, and with full autofocus tracking. And, when needed, you can also use a mechanical shutter to achieve a first-rate shooting speed of 12fps.

As a pioneer of DSLR video and a developer of the famous Cinema EOS series of cameras and lenses, we are in a favorable position to provide EOS R5 with powerful film production capabilities. Capture excellent 12-bit RAW video internally at 8K, or record 4K (4:2:2 10-bit) at a frame rate of up to 120p to provide excellent slow-motion effects. All of these use the entire width of the camera's full-frame sensor to obtain a true cinematic effect. The dual-pixel CMOS AF II with face/eye detection function makes things look clearer and achieves an impressive zoom transition in all video modes.

Advanced wireless technology will change the way you work

EOS R5 utilizes a consistently on Bluetooth low vitality association with keep up a nonstop connection with savvy gadgets. Simply launch the Canon Camera Connect application and the camera will establish a fast Wi-Fi connection, enabling photographers to browse, view and transfer images, and perform remote shooting.

Performance For Video Recording

Okay, let's immediately deal with what everyone is talking about: Yes, shooting anything higher than the standard 4K 30p video will cause the Canon EOS R5 to heat up internally, so recording restrictions are required to prevent overheating.

Shooting 4K 30p will not cause any overheating problems, so you can shoot any number of videos (all recordings are subject to the usual 30-minute limit of a single file, but you can record any 30-minute file). However, the higher the requirements for video settings, the restrictions will be imposed. Therefore, shooting 4K 60p will cause the camera to overheat in about 35 minutes while shooting 8K 30p will cause the camera to overheat in about 20 minutes after that, you need to let the camera cool down before recording (there is a malfunction here).

If you regularly shoot videos above 4K 30p, it must be a problem. Although it is unusual for any work to take a 20-minute lens, the overheating problem is cumulative. Therefore, if you shoot a series of short videos or shoot a large number of still images, the inside of the camera has begun to heat up. It is difficult to estimate how much time you can actually record. This is also affected by the temperature of your location; hot outdoor environments and direct sunlight will further shorten the shooting time, and unless you are in a cool and controllable environment, things will be unpredictable.

Again, none of these apply to 4K 30p-we happily spent a few days shooting 8K 30p and 4K 60p clips between still images without a problem. However, if your main interest is a video and then still images (if available), then we don't think the R5 is suitable for this purpose-we strongly recommend that you test drive it to make your own decision.

However, if you do not violate the recording restrictions, you will find that 8K video is very rich and detailed (of course, 20 minutes of 8K is still 20 minutes more than any other current camera), and the oversampling 4K mode produces the best we have seen Lens. The standard jumper 4K feels a bit pedestrian, and the Canon EOS R6 is actually better in this regard because it has no jumper function.

As you can see in the example 4K videos above (60fps) and below (120fps), the picture quality is very clear, and the powerful IBIS really allows you to shoot without a gimbal in most situations. Keep in mind that if you want to shoot 8K, oversampled 4K, or 4K 120p, you need to invest in one of the best external hard drives because it can quickly fill up the memory card and disc space. You also need a powerful computer to actually handle 8K, because some computers can't even open the video, let alone process the video clips.

There are other video limitations to be aware of unless you use a CFexpress card, you cannot record more demanding video modes (RAW, 8K 4K 120p, etc.), so please keep this in mind. SD

As a result, you cannot record video to both cards at the same time, and thus cannot create redundant backups, so you will need to handle the proxy server easily-and if the card fails, you will lose your job. Of course, you cannot use the EF-S lens to record 8K or 4K material, because this will crop the recording area or enable movie cropping (obviously the same).

Construction and processing

The EOS R5 in the hand feels like a stronger EOSR. Its thickness is almost imperceptible (actually only 3.6 mm), but the weight is significantly larger, weighing about 70 grams. However, the weight distribution is very even, and the body feels very balanced-indeed, the extra mass makes it feel better matched to some well-known larger RF lenses.

Viewed from the top, the R5 is very similar to the EOS R and has the same top OLED screen and mode buttons on the rear control dial. When it comes into play at the rear, the first thing you will notice is that the M-Fn's "I never tire of it" touch bar has been removed; replaced by the familiar joystick with the AF-ON button in its more traditional position.

The steering wheel also replaces the single D-pad button on the EOS R and Canon EOS RP, all of which make the R5 feel more like using Canon EOS 5D Mark IV-appropriate because this is the 5 series camera intended to go with DSLR.

Thankfully, the camera retains the clearly visible touch screen on the EOS R and RP, which is very important for recording video (and shooting still images from a high or low angle).

As a 5 series camera, you can expect the same strong weatherproof performance-although the mirrorless model is always more beautiful (and also has a flexible screen), it is still not as strong as the 5D. Of course, it can withstand some knocks, but unlike DSLR, you really don’t want to drop it or leave it in the hands of children.

The R5 is also equipped with a brand new 2,130mAh battery LP-E6NH, which has a capacity of 14% larger than the LP-E6N it replaces – and is backward compatible with any camera that accepts the LP-E6 battery series, so you can also use it with other cameras With the use of.

Our Opinion

Canon EOS R5 is a true Jekyll and Hyde product. For photography, it is definitely the best camera. Despite the fact that the A7R IV has more megapixels, in spite of the fact that we are astounded that the 5D Mark IV has phenomenal ISO and dynamic range, the organization like qualities of the R5-goal frame rate, IBIS, autofocus- make this Don't let down the king of all-round, high-resolution, high-speed photography.

Autofocus really cannot be exaggerated. If you take photos of people or animals, you will automatically benefit from the advantages of R5. What we want to say is that it is not only the best camera for wildlife photography, but any serious wildlife shooter should really consider it.

The image stability in EOS R5 is the best image we have used on any full-frame system, only Olympus and Panasonic’s Micro three-quarter cameras (they have excellent IBIS because their sensors are much smaller) It has the best image stability. Whether you are shooting in low light, with long shutter speed, shooting on a long lens, or shooting video without a gimbal, different effects will be produced.

video, the video is Mr. Hyde of Formula. The reality is that if your main interest is pure video shooting, we do not recommend Canon EOS R5. Don't get me wrong, its video is incredible-but the limitation of overheating must be overcome to prevent it from becoming an A camera (unless you only shoot 4K 30p, you don't need it anyway).

If you only shoot a few minutes of video, it is entirely possible that you will never encounter the recording limit, which is actually good for many people. In a short period of time, its top 4K and 8K modes are really amazing-but the more videos you shoot, the worse the usability, so when other cameras shoot 4K 30p and above videos, it is difficult to recommend the video priority. Any restrictions. Sadly, this is not the magic camera that content creators and photographers hope for.

However, as a still camera, the R5 is definitely Canon's best product ever. The shape of EOS R, the functions of EOS 5D, and the professional autofocus function of EOS-1D X are perfectly combined. On the off chance that you are a static or blended shooter who meanders among photography and videography, at that point Canon EOS R5 is one of the remarkable innovation and truly outstanding cameras, and you will be lucky enough to use it.
